A spacetime-metric shell (Alcubierre / Bobrick–Martire class) is supposed to contract space ahead and expand it behind. The craft rides inside; exotic energy and how you accelerate the bubble are open questions (OQ-001). Housekeeping fusion only runs the bus — not the drive.
